In 1982 three Reston neighbors saved a small dogwood tree from a construction site and replanted it at the entrance to their community, Governour's Square. The tree grew into a large specimen, heralding each spring with a shower of white blossoms. But after 26 years the tree was three-fourths dead, a victim of drought, disease, and over-mulching. On June 18, 2008 the neighbors gathered around their dying tree to watch as it was dug up to begin a new life as Sleeping Tree in environmental artist, Shinji Turner-Yamamoto's exhibition at GRACE. |
