SESSION 1 Color Me Crazy — July 7-11
Ages: completion of Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd or 3rd grades
Kids will explore color, light and design using a variety of techniques from drawing to painting, while experimenting with collage, creating
patterns, shaping repetition and contrast. Artists to be explored include Picasso, Matisse, Bearden, Hockney, as well minimalists such as Rothko, Kelly and LeWitt.
SESSION 2 Material Madness — July 14-18
Ages: completion of Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd or 3rd grades
Kids will use themselves as models as they construct paper body forms, bend and twist wire shapes, craft wood forms, shape clay bodies, and assemble mixed media shadow boxes. We will look at artists who have used a variety of materials to give life to their
subjects including Calder, Nevelson, Hepworth, and Moore.
SESSION 3 Artrageous Objects — July 21-25
Ages: completion of 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th grades
Useful objects can be outrageous, whimsical, and even humorous. Kids will explore the creative process of designing products and bringing them to life using sketching, painting, and modeling. Examples in the field of
industrial design and craft will be given as an inspirational starting points.
SESSION 4 Advanced Media Exploration — July 28-August 1
Ages: completion of 1st—5th grades
The focus of this class is sculpture. Kids will create structures using nature and human forms as creative inspiration. They will construct both flora and fauna with paper, wire, wood, clay and mixed media. We will look at artists who have used a variety of materials to give life to their subjects!
About the Teacher — Marco Rando
GRACE is pleased to have artist Marco Rando, a native Restonian, teach this summer. Marco earned a degree in Industrial Design at Pratt Institute, studied sculpture at the Corcoran, and now has a studio on Lake Anne. He won his first art award at GRACE while in 6th grade. Since 1996 he and his family have performed improv exhibitions in New York and D.C. museums. In 2005, Marco participated in GRACE's inaugural exhibition IMPRINT, a prelude to his Focus Exhibition at GRACE in May, 2007.
